Reassessment of Bedford County properties will start Wednesday, March 19, 2025, which means property owners will begin to see appraisal staff in their neighborhoods.
The Code of Virginia requires a general reassessment of all real property be conducted by every locality to update the assessed value to reflect current market value. Bedford County hired Wingate Appraisal Service to complete the 2027 general reassessment. Wingate is a professional appraisal firm approved by the Virginia Department of Taxation.
Here is what property owners should know about appraisal visits:
- Staff will be looking at the exterior of each home and/or property.
- Staff will be in vehicles marked with “Real Estate Assessment/Wingate Appraisal Service” on the side. All vehicle license plates are registered with the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office.
- Staff will be wearing identification badges.
- When arriving to a property, staff will try to make contact with the property owner. If the property owner is not there, staff will leave a flyer.
- In some cases, staff will take photos of the home or property. These photos are for internal use only for the reassessment process.
Reassessment of properties will continue over the next 15 months; property owners will receive notices in the fall of 2026, which will take effect Jan. 1, 2027.
