Lynchburg Mourns the Loss of Beloved Anchor Mark Spain
The Lynchburg community is mourning the loss of one of its good guys. Mark Spain, a cherished anchor at ABC13-WSET, passed away on Wednesday, December 18, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Mark’s passing leaves an irreplaceable figure in our local television station newsroom and the Greater Lynchburg community.
Journalists are not always described as "one of the good guys," especially in today’s world, but Mark Spain seemed to earn that title effortlessly. For nearly a decade, families across south-central Virginia welcomed him into their homes, drawn to his genuine warmth and authenticity. George Kayes, Vice President and General Manager of WSET, reflected on Mark’s character, saying, “Mark was the same person on the air as he was off; there wasn’t an ounce of pretense about him.”
Mark’s impact extended far beyond the newsroom. The "Living in Lynchburg" community Facebook page, with over 100,000 followers, overflowed with tributes, likes, and comments expressing admiration for Mark’s positivity and the joy he brought to those around him. WSET echoed this sentiment, noting that Mark’s unwavering smile and optimism resonated deeply with their team and viewers. Even in his final days, when addressing his diagnosis, Mark remained a beacon of strength and hope.
Mark is survived by his wife, Lynita, and their three children, two daughters and a son. In a heartfelt tribute, Lynita described her husband as a man of hope who radiated kindness and respect. “Our family, along with the city of Lynchburg, lost a man of hope—someone who loved his city and stood for equality,” she shared. “He brought so much joy, compassion, love, and strength into our lives, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.”
George Kayes also expressed the station’s grief, saying, “We are devastated by this loss. Mark was a vital part of our station. He was family. Mark was a leader in this community and loved his job. But more than anything, he loved his family. Now it’s our turn to support them in any way we can.”
Mark Spain’s legacy as a trusted journalist, community leader, and beloved family man will remain etched in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Mark Spain was one of the good guys.
